Eminem leans back with 'The Marshall Mathers LP 2' album that hits stores Nov. 5, Eminem is going back to his roots. The rapper's new album is titled "The Marshall Mathers LP 2," a throwback to his Grammy-winning 2000 album "The Marshall Mathers LP," it was announced Sunday during MTV's Video Music Awards.
The album will hit stores Nov. 5. The Detroit rapper's new single "Berzerk" is due out Tuesday, according to Em's website.
Two Eminem commercials aired during the VMAs, both for Beats by Dre headphones. The first was a 15-second spot that aired early in the 9 p.m. hour and showed the words "Eminem," "MMLP2," the album's date and a note that it was executive produced by Dr. Dre and Rick Rubin. It contained a tease of a new recording, which is presumably "Berzerk." The second, which aired at 11 p.m., gave a longer sneak peak at the song and showed glitchy, pixelated video of Eminem standing in front of an oversize boombox and rapping in front of a city backdrop. The song samples Billy Squier's 1981 rock radio staple "The Stroke."
Eminem, who performed at a series of European festivals over the weekend, did not appear on the VMAs telecast.
"The Marshall Mathers LP," Eminem's second major label album, is his fastest selling album — it sold 1.76 million copies its first week — and his most critically celebrated work, which found him openly struggling with the sudden fame he was struck with following 1999's "The Slim Shady LP." It was favored to win the Grammy for Album of the Year but lost to Steely Dan's "Two Against Nature" in what is thought of as one of the Grammys' biggest-ever blunders. It won the trophy for Best Rap Album.
"The Marshall Mathers LP 2" is Eminem's first album since 2010's "Recovery."
"Survival," a song from the new album, was released earlier this month as part of the promotion for the next "Call of Duty" video game.
Eminem's voice was also used in a series of Beats by Dre ads for the company's portable speakers, dubbed the Pill, that aired during the Video Music Awards.
