Selena Gomez is "so upset" over the backlash to "13 Reasons Why", Selena Gomez is "so upset" over the backlash to "13 Reasons Why," reveals Life & Style, which reports the controversy surrounding the Netflix series, which she produced, is affecting the singer-actress' mental health.
Despite critical acclaim, parents, educators and mental health professionals have accused "13 Reasons Why" of glamorizing suicide and inappropriately depicting rape and drug use. Gomez is "crushed by the criticism" and has been "left reeling," says the magazine. An insider for the publication maintains the controversy is "hitting her like a hurricane," and, consequently, she's "despondent over the whole thing."
The outlet further maintains Gomez's loved ones are concerned "the stress of this new controversy could be bad for her health." Yet the article doesn't mention that the singer-actress' own mom is also a producer on the project, or that they're both still on board to oversee the show's second season.
The reality, however, is that Gomez has repeatedly stressed how "proud" she is of the series. Gossip Cop is also told by sources close to the production that Gomez and others who worked on the series are happy it has sparked important conversations related to mental health. That was essentially the whole point of doing the adaptation and, far from being "left reeling," Gomez is actually seeing her mission pay off.
