Trump is ‘goading us to impeach him,’ Pelosi warns – AOL

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., who has resisted calls from some members of her party to begin impeachment proceedings against President Trump, said Tuesday that the president seems to be daring Democrats to take that politically fraught step.

“Trump is goading us to impeach him,” Pelosi said at an event sponsored by Cornell University’s Institute of Politics and Global Affairs. “That’s what he’s doing. Every single day, he’s just like taunting, taunting, taunting.

“He knows that it would be very divisive in the country,” Pelosi continued. “But he doesn’t really care. He just wants to solidify his base.”

In April, following the release of special counsel Robert Mueller’s report on Russian attempts to influence the 2016 presidential election, Pelosi warned that Democrats shouldn’t impeach Trump “for a political reason.”

She said the same Tuesday.

“We can’t impeach him for political reasons,” Pelosi said. “And we can’t not impeach him for political reasons. We have to see where the facts take us.”

[Pelosi: Trump ‘would poison the public mind’ if he narrowly loses reelection bid]

Pelosi’s comments come as the Trump administration continues to rebuff requests from House Democrats for Mueller to testify; for Attorney General William Barr to turn over an unredacted version of Mueller’s report; for former White House counsel Don McGahn to turn over notes related to Trump’s alleged acts of obstruction; and for Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin to turn over Trump’s tax returns.

Earlier Tuesday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, speaking on the floor of the Senate, said the case against Trump was “closed” with the completion of Mueller’s report.

“That’s just not a fact,” Pelosi responded. “The case is not closed.”

She mocked McConnell’s self-designation as “the Grim Reaper” for progressive bills passed by House Democrats.

“Grim Reaper, we have bad news for you,” Pelosi said. “We have good news for the American people.”
