COVID-19: Nigeria surpasses 45,000 cases as NCDC announces 354 new infections

COVID-19: Nigeria surpasses 45,000 cases as NCDC announces 354 new infections, The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on Thursday, August 6 reported that there are 354 new cases of coronavirus in Nigeria.

This means there are now 45,244 confirmed cases of COVID-19 reported in Nigeria.

While 32,430 have been discharged, 930 people have died due to the viral disease.

On Wednesday, August 5, the NCDC announced 457 new cases recorded in 21 states, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), with Lagos, Abuja and Plateau state occupying the top three spots.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian government on Thursday, August 6, announced another four weeks extension of the second phase of the eased COVID-19 lockdown.

The announcement was made during a briefing in Abuja by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha who also serves as the chairman of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19.

Mustapha said the extension of the current ease of lockdown was approved by President Muhammadu Buhari after the COVID-19 task force on Wednesday, August 5, briefed him about the progress made so far in containing the spread the disease.

In a related development, all state governments in Nigeria have been directed to enforce the wearing of face masks in public places.

The directive was given by President Buhari as part of measures to contain the spread of COVID-19 in the country.

Mustapha made the disclosure during the PTF briefing in Abuja on Thursday, August 6.

Similarly, the federal government has asked aviation authorities and airline operators in the country to begin the process for the resumption of international flights.

Sani Aliyu the national coordinator of the PTF on COVID-19 on Thursday, August 6, said the aviation industry could begin the process of preparing the Nigerian airspace to receive international flights.
