‘Deer Tick’ Covers Nirvana’s ‘In Utero’ To Celebrate Album’s 20th Anniversary

‘Deer Tick’ Covers Nirvana’s ‘In Utero’ To Celebrate Album’s 20th Anniversary, Deer Tick frontman John McCauley and his fellow musicians took to the stage on Friday night to perform Nirvana’s “In Utero” album. Speaking to a crowd at New York’s Brooklyn Bowl McCauley said the bands rendition was a tribute to the band “but with more guitars and an organ.”

Rolling Stone’s William Goodman proclaimed after the show that the quintet “sounded exactly like the late Seattle alt-rock kings.” Deer Tick is no stranger to Nirvana songs, when not performing their own work the group has performed as Deervana. However, the group had not played as their alter-ego in nearly two years. As they took to the stage McCauley saluted “one of our all-time favorite albums.”

Taking the roll seriously McCauley wore Kurt Kobain’s trademark tattered blue jeans with holes in the knees, a flannel shirt, and Converse shoes. As he sung through “Scentless Apprentice,” “Radio Friendly Unit Shifter,” and other Nirvana classics McCauley sounded the role. In fact his performance was so dead-on that Rolling Stone proclaimed him the inevitable choice for what is sure to become a Nirvana biopic.

The Nirvana “In Utero” album vocals were also helped along by drummer Dennis Ryan who went all out on Tourette’s while he simultaneously attacked his kit. Deer Tick even invited opener Torres back to the stage. Mackenzie Scott, the Nashville alt-country singer-songwriter dressed in black boots and a button-down Western shirt as she mumbled with the fervor of a long-time Kurt Cobain supporter.

At one point during the show bassist Christopher Dale Ryan dropped his instrument and dove into the crowd. With rowdy mosh-pits, a harsh and brazen sound and the power of Nirvana’s “In Utero’s” lyrics supporting them the night was officially deemed a success.
